Vogel, a 1958 Columbus High School graduate, was second in the state in diving his sophomore and junior years. He was the state championship his senior year and set a state record. He also became the first high school diver to perform the full-twisting one-and-a-half somersault.

Vogel continued his career at the collegiate level and was a three-time All-American at Purdue. He was the National AAU Outdoor 3-meter diving champion in 1961. In 1962, he finished second in the Big Ten 1-meter Diving Championship and in the NCAA 3-meter Diving Championship.

As a senior, Vogel also was awarded the Big 10 Medal of Honor, which factors in academics, as well as the athletics. In 1964, he was an alternate on the Olympic 10-meter Platform Diving Team.
